A computer desk was built into a closet after the doors were removed. The walls are painted dark green and stenciled with gold, and the desk is stenciled in an all-over pattern and finished with an elaborate border.
Stencil artist Melanie Royals found ways to incorporate stenciling into every room of her traditional home. She shares her ideas for using stenciling with Kitty Bartholomew :
  • To dress up the double doors in the family room that lead to the patio, Royals stenciled a wide floral pattern over the doors that covers their entire width.
  • An unpainted coffee table was transformed with a coat of paint and a broad band of stenciling along the border. The look was finished with a coat of mellow wood stain rubbed on, then wiped off. Royals recommends choosing a stencil that is in proportion to the piece of furniture being decorated.
  • One of Royals' favorite pieces in the house is a stenciled room screen. Three plywood panels were cut with an arch by the home center and then hinged together . Royals stenciled an all-over lattice work pattern on, then added a spaced red floral design.
  • The breakfast room has a grape vine border that has been layered in the corners with stencils of roses and ivy leaves. A floral upholstery pattern used in the room was the inspiration for the design.
  • The breakfast table was painted white and a blue cartouche (an ornamental frame ) was stenciled in the middle. The pattern matches the scrollwork on dinnerware.
  • In the bedroom, an old chest was painted white and a shell motif was stenciled on each drawer around the pull.
  • Wisteria was stenciled up and around the bed like a headboard.
  • The dresser was dressed with a tromp l'oeil scene including the wisteria used over the bed.
  • In the office, closet doors were removed to create a computer desk in the closet space. The walls were painted dark green and stenciled with gold. The desk top was also stenciled and bordered, creating a focal point for the room.
  • The walls of the office were stenciled in three patterns, using deep rust and yellow ocher glazes. The wide, dark green crown moulding was also stenciled and a medallion was stenciled on the ceiling around the light fixture.
