Following are steps on how to transfer stencils:

  1. Acquire a copy of Jocasta Innes' Painted Furniture book, which has patterns and transfer paper included.
  2. Center the pattern on the door, with the transfer paper underneath, and attach it.
  3. Press down with a sharp pencil to outline the entire pattern (figure A).
  4. Pull the paper off the door, leaving the pattern.
  5. Fill in the lines with paint, and then highlight the insides of the pattern with same dark color used on border (figure B).
  6. With super-fine grade sandpaper, rub across the painted pattern to age it a bit .
  7. If you like, leave it as it is, or wash the entire pattern and background with a complementary color wash.
