Linoleum blocks were used to create these artistic designs.
Home-craft expert Kathi Cardinalli discusses the classic craft of linoleum block printing.

Materials:

linoleum block (linoleum glued to a block of wood)
tracing paper
linoleum-cutting tool (available at art-supply stores)
printer's ink
brayer (tiny rolling pin)

Steps:

  1. Trace any design desired (a leaf was used for this project) on the top of the linoleum block.

Figure A
  • Place the linoleum block in a wood contraption that will support the block. Basically, screw three pieces of wood (two sides at least an inch thicker than the linoleum block and one flat piece) together at a right angle (figure A).

  • Using linoleum-cutting tools, carve the traced design into the wood. This takes patience and time. Be creative and have fun.

  • Ink a brayer and roll onto the carved block.

  • Place a piece of paper on the inked block and press (use another brayer to roll over the design).
