Take a closer look at this headboard--it's actually painted using a stencil to resemble an old rusted piece.
Materials:

Americana acrylics (DA63 Burnt Sienna, DA67 Lamp Black)
Easy Blend stencil paint (DEB28 Charcoal Gray)
stencil (#198 Acanthus Panel)
stencil brush
measuring tape
high-density foam roller

Steps:

  1. Measure the width and height of the bed where it meets the wall. Measure the different sections of the stencil. Make photocopies of the picture from the front of the instruction sheet and cut them out. Use these small cutouts to create the desired headboard, being sure they equal the bed's width measurement. Use this as a guide to stencil the exact replica on the wall.
  2. Start at the center of the space at the height of the mattress and work out to the sides using a roller to apply Burnt Sienna, and then Lamp Black according to the directions.
  3. When the image is complete, use Charcoal Gray and a small brush to add a drop shadow. Choose a light source and shadow below and to the opposite side of it.
