Figure B
Melanie Royals from Royal Design Studio and host Renai Ellison demonstrate a stenciling technique that is an updated version of the bronze-powder stenciling that was a traditional Early American design (see photo).

Materials:

Early American grape-leaf component (Royal Design Studio brand was used on the show.)
metallic paint (Aqua Finishing Solutions in Dutch Metal Gold and Dutch Metal Silver were used on the show.)
stencil brushes
polyurethane spray sealer

Steps:

  1. Develop a grape cluster by stenciling large foreground grapes. Use a very dry stencil brush and concentrate the paint in areas of highlights. Create a champagne color by mixing two parts gold to one part silver.

  2. Continue to develop grape clusters by positioning varying sizes of grapes that appear to go behind those in the foreground (figure A). This is accomplished by concentrating paint color on the highlight areas and allowing paint to completely fade out to black where the grapes overlap.

  3. Position leaves to complete the image, painting in the same manner--fading where they go "behind" and concentrating the color around the edges.

  4. Use a stencil cutout curve or arc to paint the veins by building up color just along the edge (figure B).

  5. When dry, spray with a polyurethane sealer.
