Stencil a simple star onto a white tile for a festive hot-pot trivet.

Jan Dressler, from Dressler Stencil Company, demonstrates how to etch and paint tile to make patriotic trivets.

Material:

white tile
white vinegar
star stencil
Delta Air-Dry PermEnamel paint
tape

Steps:

  1. Wipe tile with white vinegar and let dry.
  2. Secure stencil to tile with tape.
  3. Dab stencil brush in red paint and rub off excess. Pounce the red paint onto the top half of the stencil (figure A). Repeat with blue paint.
  4. Dab stencil brush in black paint and rub off excess. Pounce around the edges of the stencil to add depth (figure B).
  5. Allow the trivets to air dry for a week or bake in the oven according to paint directions.
