Figure C
Glass painter Barry Freestone shows how to create a mosaic-patterned vase.

Materials:

clear glass vase
self-adhesive film
water-based transparent paints (in three or more colors)
gold outliner
scissors

Steps:

  1. Photocopy a grid onto the backing of a sheet of self-adhesive film (or draw a one-inch grid). This will serve as a template when the squares are cut away.

  2. On the front of the film, squeeze out horizontal lines of paint in alternating rows (figure A).

  3. Use your finger to smear the paint from side to side. Add some gold outliner to add dimension to the future tiles (figure B). You can use a hair dryer to speed the drying process, or just leave the paint to dry overnight.

  4. Once the paint is dry, use the grid template to cut the sheet into painted tiles. Starting at the top of the vase, peel the backing off the film and stick the tiles onto the glass (figure C).

  5. Work down and around the vase until the surface is covered. Work against the grain to alter the pattern so that it varies from the sheet pattern.
