It's easy to dress up picture frames or furniture with three-dimensional designs and antiquing. From molding to mirrors, armoires to tables, you can add rich detailing that will enhance the beauty of any piece. We show you how on a picture frame.

Materials:

stencil
masking tape
stencil paste (or caulk)
applicator
crackle medium and activator
two foam brushes
glazing medium
a sea sponge or rag
acrylic paint

(Supplies available at most art and craft stores.)

Steps:

  1. Spread paste on the stencil design and work it into the holes of the stencil (figure A). Don't worry about getting it even. Lift off the stencil.
  2. Apply crackle medium to outer edge, or rim, of the frame (figure B). Allow it to dry, about 20 minutes.
  3. Paint the rim with acrylic paint in the color of your choice. When the rim dries , coat it with crackle activator (figure C).
  4. Apply a 50-50 mix of acrylic paint and the glazing medium to the rest of the frame - but not the rim - then wipe in one direction with a sea sponge or rag (figure D).
  5. Add a different color of acrylic paint to the mixed glaze, and paint again. Again , wipe in one direction with a sea sponge or rag (figure E).
  6. Using an artist's brush, paint the raised design with the colors of your choice . Be as creative as you want in selecting and applying these colors (figure F).
