Susan Driggers shares how to give a piece of furniture a timeless design.
Materials:
paint (Durable Colors - Oxblood)
stencil (Stencil Decor - #26648 - Canterbury Scoll)
3/4" stencil brush (Stencil Decor - #34068)
crackle medium (Decorator Products -#53528)
paint (Folk Artist colors - #905, Buttercup; #904, Lemonade)
table
tissue paper or newspaper
Steps:
- If using new, unstained furniture, mix a stain made of 1/2 part Oxblood paint and 1/2 part water. Apply the stain to the entire table (figure A) and allow to dry.
- Find the center of the table and four quadrants by cutting a piece of newspaper or tissue paper to the size of the tabletop (figure B). Determine what part of the stencil you want to use and tape it off (figure C).
- Lay the stencil on the tabletop and apply the crackle medium. Repeat in each quadrant, making sure it is dry before proceeding to the next one. Apply a 2nd application in each of the four quadrants to make sure there is good coverage. Clean the stencil thoroughly before proceeding to the next step.
- Lay the stencil on the table over the crackle and apply a thick layer of Buttercup and Lemonade (dab the brush in each color for a light mix) (figure D). Repeat in each quadrant, making sure it is dry before proceeding to the next one.
- Apply a coat of spray varnish.
