Materials:

dresser
paint
wallpaper liner or heavy paper
double-backed tape or spray adhesive
pre-primed casing molding trim board
stencils
acrylic paint
stencil brushes
shelf glass with beveled edges
staple gun

Steps:

  1. Prepare dresser by cleaning the surface, applying primer and then base-coat the inside and outside with latex paint in desired colors.
  2. Remove drawers and backing. Measure the inside of the dresser where the drawers came out and cut glass to fit.
  3. Stencil heavy paper or wallpaper liner with checkers, cut to size and apply to the inside back of the dresser (figure A) with a staple gun.
  4. Slip the shelves into place.
  5. Measure and cut the pre-primed molding to fit the opening edges of the outside frame and the front edges of the new shelves. Stencil as desired before cutting to size (figure B).
  6. Glue or nail molding into place (figure C). Be sure to attach pieces above the glass so the edges don't show.
