Room by Room : Episode RXR-2010 -- More Projects »
Host Matt Fox talks about the process for checking lumber to make sure the pieces you get are all usable:

Give lumber the eyeball test. Lay or hold the board out in front of you and look straight down it to check for imperfections. If it's warped, you'll be able to see that right away and it shouldn't be used.

If the board is twisted, don't purchase it either as you'll never be able to nail it flat.

This board rises, or crowns, in the center so it also doesn't lie flat.

Finally, check for nicks and dents along the edges to avoid making a return trip to the lumber yard.
