Repairing Drywall

Here are some solutions to common drywall problems:

  • For rough walls, sand the surface with 150-grit sandpaper until smooth. Remove the dust and use a broad-blade putty knife to apply spackling compound to fill any nail holes. Once dry, apply a latex primer to seal and protect the drywall.

  • One of the most common problems occurs when the drywall starts to crack along a seam through expansion and contraction. To eliminate this, open the crack further with a five-in-one tool. Apply drywall compound in the gap using a putty knife, and then immediately cover the compound with a strip of flexible fiberglass tape. Smooth the tape with a broad knife by pressing it into the compound. Once the tape is in place, smooth it out with more compound, feathering it out away from the tape. Let this dry, and then add another coat. Once dry, sand the surface until smooth. Apply more compound as above and sand until the seam is smooth.
