Matt Fox offers these tips for proper paint storage:- To get a perfect seal after opening a new can of paint, tap holes every inch or so around the rim of the can using a finish nail and hammer (do this before pouring). These allow any paint around the rim to drip back into the can.
- Always pour from one side of the can and make sure not to do so over the formula information on the label as you may need that later on when purchasing more paint to match. Note: Always use a plastic pail to carry paint around; don't work from the paint can.
- After pouring the paint, wipe off the rim with a paper towel to remove any excess that hasn't dripped back into the can. Replace the lid and tap it tight using a rubber mallet.
- Store the can in a cool area, but never in a place where the paint can freeze as that ruins latex paint, making it the consistency of cottage cheese. Store the paint upside down. This way no air can get into the can, causing it to skim over or dry out.
- Finally, write the color number, formula, room the paint was used in and the date on the can. This information will come in handy in the future.
- If necessary, use paint strainers to remove any debris resulting from improper storage methods.
