Robb Whittlef shares how to turn flea market items into fun and functional pieces for the home.

  • Use ceiling tins to create wall-pocket vases for silk flowers (figure A). Put two tins together, drill holes around the edges with a metal drill bit and whip- stitch with a light-gauge wire. Use a heavier-gauge wire to create the handle. Apply a diluted umber-colored stain.
  • Turn a regular medicine chest into a functional desk chest (figure B). Remove the mirror and staple window screen in its place. Add a small knob and paint, as desired.
  • Create a unique desk with a door and three old window frames (figure C). Remove the glass from the windows and attach at the corners. Add a door for the top and paint, as desired.
  • Use the base of a pot-bellied stove as an outdoor fire pit (figure D). Spray-paint the stove black and place outside for year-round use.
