Crackled and stenciled switch plates add interest to an ordinary room item.
Crackled Switch Plate

Materials:

plastic switch plate
oil-based bonding primer
black paint (gloss)
acrylic paint (red)
crackle medium
paintbrushes
black ink stamp pad
industrial -strength glue
polyurethane or varnish sealer
wood appliques

Steps:

  1. Apply primer and let dry. Paint black and let dry.
  2. Follow crackle medium directions and allow to get tacky. Cover with red paint (as heavy or light as desired).
  3. Paint appliques red. Once dry, apply black ink to the raised portions for dimension.
  4. Glue to switch plate, being careful not to cover screw holes or switch openings.
  5. Apply sealer for protection. Once in place, paint screws to match if desired.

Stenciled Switch Plate

Materials:

plastic switch plate
oil-based bonding primer
blackened bronze craft paint
metallic buffing cream
stencil
paintbrush
re-positionable spray adhesive
polyurethane or varnish sealer

Steps:

  1. Apply primer and let dry. Paint bronze and let dry.
  2. Spray adhesive to stencil back and put in position. Use a finger to apply metallic buffing cream to the design.
  3. Once dry, apply sealer for protection. Paint screws to match if desired.
