Robb Whittlef shows Joan Steffend how to make little birdhouses, a jewelry organizer, and refinish a cabinet.
Birdhouses
These small birdhouses make clever accent pieces indoors or out. The key to this project is to find a base post with a beautiful shape. Whittlef used a porch post for one and the foot of a bed for the other. Drill a hole in the bottom and glue in a dowel at the desired height. Drill a small hole in the face of the post for the bird hole and add a rest--either a nail or small dowel. The roof can be made with a piece of shingle, or, for a shake effect, small pieces of wood can be glued on in an overlapping pattern.
Jewelry Organizer
An old hardware organizer becomes an organizer for jewelry with a few elegant touches . First, paint on a coat of whitewash and slightly distress it. Then glue on to each compartment a piece of felt cut to fit.
Cabinet
The shell of a cabinet--no top or back--gets new life with the addition of beadboard and paint. First nail on a plywood back and whitewash the interior. A shelf can be added at this point, if desired. Cover sides and front of cabinet with beadboard. Add a simple wood top, trimmed out. The finishing touch is a decorative back component (in this case, the crown of an old mirror that fit perfectly) nailed to the top of the cabinet like a backsplash. Paint the entire unit then sand out the edges and front for a soft finish.
