Materials:

scrap wood cut in slats
spindles or dowels
paint
drill
vise grips
screws, washers and nuts
pillow sham
nylon cording

Steps:

  1. Place all four slats on top of each other and pre-drill a hole at the middle point. Use a clamp if necessary.
  2. Measure three inches in from both ends and drill another hole through all four slats (figure A).
  3. Paint as desired.
  4. Cut four pieces of dowel or old spindles to 12-inch lengths to hold the hamper together, use four pieces of dowel or old spindles. Drill a hole in the end of each one. Screw a double-sided screw into each piece with vise grips, leaving enough thread sticking out to attach the slats of wood (figure B).
  5. Assemble the sides by putting two slats together, and then attach them through the center hole using a screw, washer and a nut. These parts will allow the hamper to fold up and be portable. Repeat with the other two slats.
  6. Place the sides next to each other and attach them with the spindles, washers and wing nuts (figure C).
  7. Cut two yards of nylon cording. Open the seam around the top of the pillowcase and thread the cording through the seam.
