The first step in sprucing up the cabin was to rearrange the furniture, placing the couch on an angle in front of the fireplace and bringing in a wicker chair from the porch to complete the conversation area. Other changes include:
- Books and games found at a garage sale fill the empty bookcases. Matt Fox added a shelf over a doorway between two bookcases for additional display.
- To hide the clutter of a full bookcase in the family room, Shari Hiller hung a suspension rod and panels in a fabric that coordinates with curtains.
- Dark wood shelves and a blue and white plate collection, both antique sale finds, were hung on the living room wall in place of the sailboat picture that was moved to the kitchen area.
- Fox built a simple sofa table patterned after an expensive antique seen at the market. A lamp found at the dump and refreshed with a coat of paint and a new shade was placed on it.
- A platform bed was built for the mattress just sitting on the floor in the kid's area. It was built with 1' x 12' pine. Beadboard was added around the base with panel adhesive and liquid nails. A piece of one-inch trim covered the joint between panel and board. A piece of plywood was used for the platform. A picket fence headboard was built from 1x4s. The entire bed was primed and painted and dressed with a denim coverlet. Bunches of throw pillows finish the look.
- Quilts were hung in the kids' area from a wooden drapery rod. They work double -time as wall art or a cover.
