Polish Hinges and Knobs

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1102 -- More Projects »
Host Matt Fox suggests the following tips for cleaning tarnished and painted items:
  • Remove tarnish by wiping the knob or hinge with a mixture of about 1/2 cup flour, one teaspoon salt and 1/2 cup lemon juice. Dry with a clean towel.
  • For a softer luster, purchase Rubbing Powder (Rottenstone) from a hardware store. Mix it with vegetable oil to create a paste. Wipe it on and remove the excess with a towel.
  • Place hinges or knobs with paint on them in a coffee can with a paint remover. Allow time for it to work, and then gently scrub it with a toothbrush. Rub item with wood chips or sawdust to remove paint completely.
