Consignment Shop Tips

Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-407 -- More Projects »
Consignment shops, which act as agents for people who have items they wish to sell , are a great place to shop for useful stuff at less-than-retail prices. Show host Kitty Bartholomew visits one Los Angeles establishment, Consignments Unlimited, whose owner, Steven Kelley, has these tips for shoppers:

  • Inspect items carefully; shop personnel will share any information they have about items, but their knowledge may be limited.
  • Go beyond the obvious. Look at lines, details, etc., to see whether a piece has potential.
  • Understand that shops don't have the manpower or the time to refinish pieces, so you will have to be responsible for any repairs or renovations. Decide whether you have the time, money or knowledge to do what needs to be done.
  • Don't be afraid to ask whether the store will take less than the marked price. Their policies may permit them to contact the owner and relay the query.
