Broken china and tiles can be recycled as a colorful mosaic finish for almost any surface, indoor or out. Picture frames, boxes, trays and table tops are a few of the surfaces that can be covered. If the object is for outdoor use, be sure and use sanded grout. Also, make sure the thickness of the ceramics used is the same ; don't mix chunky pottery or tile pieces with bone china pieces.
- Break ceramics into small pieces.
- Make sure the surface to be covered is clean and dust-free.
- Using a hot glue gun or a pre-mixed grout adhesive, butter each piece and place it on the surface.
- Fill in the spaces between ceramic pieces with grout, either sanded or smooth . Press grout into crevices with a spatula or fingers. Grout can be purchased pre -mixed in small quantities, or unmixed. A variety of colors is available.
- Remove excess grout from the surface of ceramics with a stiff brush and then a wet sponge. Wipe dry with a towel.
- Seal, if desired, after grout thoroughly dries. (If you used pre-mixed adhesive and grout, you won't need to seal. If you're using a plain white grout, finish up with a sealant.)
