If you're using masking tape to tape off an area before painting it, don't try to cut the tape in one section. Instead, cut smaller strips, each with a good straight-cut edge. Use the smaller strips to mask off the space, lining up the straight edges. The rough edges of tape can be overlapped where they meet.
