Attaching shutters to a ready-made bookshelf creates an interesting and useful display piece.
Materials:

old or new wood bookshelf
wood or plastic shutters that fit the bookshelf opening
primer
hinges
screws
electric drill or screwdriver
flat latex paint
glaze medium
paintbrushes
cloths
glazing medium
raw umber acrylic paint
low luster clear finish
knob

Steps:

  1. Paint plastic shutters with primer and let dry.
  2. Paint shelves and shutters in desired color and let dry.
  3. Mix glaze and raw umber paint to desired color. Brush a thin coat of the colored glaze onto the surfaces, and then wipe the excess off with dry cloths. Let dry well .
  4. Coat with a clear finish to protect the surface and let dry.
  5. Attach shutters to shelves using screws and drill or screwdriver.
  6. Add a decorative knob to the shutters for easy access.
