Figure A
Joan Steffend tours a 1947 home decorated with garage sale furnishings in a vintage '50s style . Some of the interesting design elements include:
  • The kitchen exudes a dineresque quality with the red, white and black color palette and chrome accessories. A wood valance over one of the windows holds a collection of old pots, pans and utensils (figure A). The red and white tiled backsplash is actually made from less expensive floor tiles; the same pattern is mimicked with industrial-grade vinyl tiles on the floor.
  • The living room features a late '50s look with straight-lined furniture, tailored drapes and an old TV. A 1947 comic strip that was found in the home during a remodeling project is used as artwork.
