An old shutter tops decorative plaster pieces for more accessory space.
Materials:

old shutter
circular saw/guide
back saw/miter box
1" x 4" pine pieces
wood glue
finish nails
spackle
1/8" glass for top
plaster pieces for legs
plastic tabs
router

Steps:

1. Cut the shutter with a circular saw to desired length. Clamp the guide in place and adjust the depth of the saw by releasing the depth adjustment knob and raise or lower the plate until the blade clears the wood by about 1/8 inch. Tighten the knob and cut making sure the saw plate rests against the guide (figure A). Sand the edges smooth.

2. For the trim, measure the ends and the sides of the shutter. Cut the end pieces to the exact width of the shutter, but add 1-1/2 inches to the sidepieces before cutting. Sand all edges smooth.

3. Nail the end pieces in place after drilling pilot holes and running a bead of glue along the shutter edge. Countersink the nails and apply flush spackle. Repeat steps with sidepieces (figure B).

4. Add a groove to the trim pieces about 3/4 inch in from the edge. Paint top as desired.

5. Set top on plaster legs. Put tabs to support the glass and prevent it from sliding along the edges and place glass on top.
