Figure B
Materials:

decorative balusters
3/4" copper pipe
4-3/4" copper elbows
shelf brackets
7/8" forstner bit
drill
sandpaper or steel wool
copper pipe adhesive

Note: The images refer to a small demonstration rack and any lengths mentioned on air were in respect to that.

Steps:

  1. Measuring from the top of the baluster, center a mark two inches down. Measuring from the bottom, make a centered mark five inches up.
  2. Turn the baluster 1/4 and make a centered mark five inches from the top. Do the same on the opposite side.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the second baluster.
  4. Drill one-inch-deep holes at each of the marks.
  5. Cut two lengths of copper pipe to 43 inches. These will go into the balusters on the side with two holes and are the stabilizers for the top and bottom towel racks. Do not glue yet.
  6. Cut four pieces of pipe five inches long. Place these into the holes on the bracketed sides of the balusters and put a copper elbow on each, facing each other.
  7. Measure between the two elbows on each side and cut a section of pipe to fit on either side. Be sure to allow for the section of pipe that sits inside the elbow (usually about 3/4 inch per elbow).
  8. Once all the pieces fit snugly together, finish the pipe by rubbing with sandpaper or steel wool. Glue all sections of pipe together with adhesive (figure A).
  9. Stand the balusters up and place the sides with two holes (two inches from top and five from bottom) facing each other.
  10. Attach the shelf brackets with wood glue on each of the sides with only one hole for the base (two in the front and two in the back)(figure B). Allow the glue to dry.
  11. Stain or paint to taste. Allow to dry.
