Painted and separated, these bicycle components make interesting storage in a college dorm room.
Kitty Bartholomew goes prowling in an alley and rescues a vintage step stool from the trash. She gives the old classic a second wind with a bit of paint and fabric .
  1. Wipe down the seat and back and remove any rust with steel wool, if necessary .
  2. Spray-paint, using a paint made for metal. Apply several thin coats of paint instead of one thick coat.
  3. Remove the seat and use it as a template. Trace the shape on a piece of fabric , adding one inch all around. A quarter yard should be enough for both seat and back .
  4. Run a bead of hot glue on the underside of the seat and secure the fabric, stretching it smoothly across the top.
  5. Re-set the seat.
  6. Repeat the process for the seat back.

New Life for a Bike

A broken bicycle becomes an interesting and functional wall hanging when it is cleaned, painted and separated into pieces. Perfect for a college student's room , the artfully arranged components work as hooks for caps and jackets. Keep a can of WD-40 handy to help with loosening screws on the old bike. Rust can be removed with steel wool.
