Figure C
With a few flea-market finds, a couple of antiques and a little imagination, you can have a look in your country home that's truly special. In East Tennessee, Julie Outland-Trevathan has created a cozy and relaxing home with a cottage garden look and French country flair using plenty of flea-market and antique-store finds.
  • Flea-market finds are mixed with new furnishings and antiques. The hooked rug is new and the warm earth tones enhance the cool look of the slipcovers (figure A). The dark curls on the sides of the old wrought-iron garden table bring in texture, interest and a bit of the outdoors.
  • The early 1900s table has a hog ring for a pull (figure B). Trevathan found it covered in mud and wasps' nest--a thorough washing revealed a red buttermilk paint.
  • The woodwork in the kitchen was already white, but the walls were covered in textured wallpaper. New yellow paint enhances the natural sunlight. Black and white linoleum tiles act as a neutral in the eclectic space (figure C).
  • Artwork is colorful and whimsical--she found paint-by-numbers Paris scenes for $3 each at a local antiques mall.
