Simple Pleasures

Simple pleasures from simple treasures

Sometimes the most attractive decor comes from the old basics. Old dressers, a faded chair, an old yet-to-be-framed picture--all are treasures that can make a house a home.

All of the treasures aren't always found at home, though. Some searching through flea markets, yard and garage sales might be needed. One item that brings charm and quaintness and might even invite creative daydreaming is an old trunk.

Yes, an old trunk. Some might call it a treasure chest; others might call it a hope chest. But a trunk by any other name--well, let's just say it is a great piece of furniture.

It can be used as a cocktail table in a family room. It can be used at the foot of a bed for extra storage. It can be used in the foyer just inside the door as a conversation piece. Or put a cushion on it and it becomes a place to sit and put shoes on or take them off, as needed when entering or exiting the house.

Old glass bowls are another great decorating item. Often the real old glass bowls are decorated with beautiful carvings and etchings that aren't seen too often nowadays. These old treasures make for great centerpieces on cocktail tables, dining tables, a sofa table, an end table or a fireplace mantle--the list can go on and on. The bowl by itself might be great without any further ado. But sometimes, for various holidays or special occasions, flowers, with the stems cut off, can float atop the water-filled bowl.

Baskets are another decorating accessory. Finding the right one might not be so easy; basket weaving isn't exactly the most popular trade these days.

A great-looking large basket filled with shiny red or green apples on top of a counter makes for a welcoming kitchen. A basket filled with pinecones by the fireplace makes the area look inviting even when the fire isn't there.

A basket with dried flowers in it on the living room floor warms up the room. Simple pleasures can be found in simple treasures. Just search a little.
