Men are hunters, so the best thing to do when asking Dad to help decorate the home is to give him something in particular to search for in antique malls and flea markets. Donna Warner, editor-in-chief of
Metropolitan Home magazine, provides some great ideas for hot decorative collectibles that Dad can set his sights on.
- Vintage photography: Old '40s photos of people and places, plus gin store portraits from the turn of the century.
- Hotel silver: Utilitarian yet designed with character.
- Numerals and letters: Terrific accessories to decorate his space with since they are usually made from wood, brass, cast iron or glass.
- Fishing gear: Old tackle boxes, lures and fishing rods enhance Dad's decor.
- Vintage whiskey flasks: Look for cool labels and graphics; oversized display bottles work well.
- Garden ornaments and furniture: Wrought-iron furniture is both useful and decorative; look for pieces that have a rich patina or can be refinished.
- Industrial metal pieces: Steel stools, metal tables and wire baskets are useful for storing and organizing his stuff.
- Bed linens: Linen sheets with or without monograms (Hudson Bay wool blankets are definitely manly decor items).
- Bowls: Look for simple, unadorned shapes with no markings on the bottom.
- Boxes: Men love boxes, perhaps because they are useful to hide stuff in! Old or new, they add style and character when stacked together.
