Materials:
corrugated cardboard (18" x 40")
acrylic paints
paintbrushes
metal ruler
craft knife
stapler
large cutting mat
scissors
awl
hammer
large dinner plate
tapestry needle with large eye
4 yards plastic cord
Steps :
1. Paint cardboard by creating large splashes of color, layers and details until entire piece is covered (figure A). Let dry.
2. Cut 1-1/2" x 40" strips across corrugations using metal ruler and craft knife . Set aside one strip for binding edge. Cut remaining long strips in half to create 20-inch pieces.
3. Rub strips painted side down over the edge of a table to soften and curve the paper.
4. Begin weaving strips by laying two strips down to make a cross. Place third strip over the second at right angles to it and parallel with the first strip. Place the fourth strip parallel to the second, over the third and under the first as if weaving a lattice pie top. Continue weaving until there are eight strips in each direction that line up at the edges.
5. Place plate upside down in center of woven square and trace around it. Set plate aside and staple the cardboard pieces together along the line (cut outer pieces as necessary to reach line).
6. Cut out plate shape 1/4 to 1/2 inch beyond staple line. Make holes 1/2 inch apart along the outer edge of the circle.
7. Bend extra cardboard strip in half lengthwise and hold it around the outer edge of the circle while threading the plastic cording through the holes to secure it in place.
