Figure A
Field reporter Joe Lovitt meets with interior designer Richard Anderson, who explains how to create a new look in a room while staying within a limited budget.

  • Make your own table base (figure A). Go to a lumberyard and get enough lumber to make a simple box. Cover the box with self-adhesive tiles (that can be found at a hardware store), and place a table round on top.

  • Create height in a room by making a drapery valance to go over the windows. Measure the window, adding a little to each end, and use the measurements to build a three-sided box with foam-core panels.

  • Decorate the box with self-adhesive tiles from a do-it-yourself center and hang above the window (figures B and C). Mount a curtain rod behind the valance and hang the curtains. This is an easy, inexpensive way to add a personal, unique touch to any room.

  • Add light whenever possible. Mirrors, candles and lamps are a quick and inexpensive way to make a dramatic difference in a room.

  • Painting is always the cheapest and most dramatic way to change the look of a room. Use faux techniques for added interest.
