Figure C
Designer Wendy Umanoff shares how she uses salvaged objects as highly unusual country accents in her Richmond, Virginia, home.
  • A long narrow board once used as part of painter's scaffold is now an entry bench (figure A). She attached chair legs and painted the entire piece white to tie the look together.
  • A white enamel water pitcher and bowl is now used as a vase.
  • An old architect's drafting box is a catchall near the front door.
  • Garden tools are used to hold soap, tissue and photographs in the bathroom (figure B). Tip: Use caution when using such garden tools as decorative accents.
  • Wood shutters and door panels act as movable walls and provide interesting display space.
  • Ladders are used to organize and display magazines (figure C).
  • Single stem flowers in champagne glasses add a whimsical touch when placed inside a rusted yellow tool box.
