Turn antique knobs into a useful coat rack.

1" x 4" pine boards (top: 24" long, support: 22" long)

2. Router a decorative groove into the support piece using a "v" bit (figure A).

3. Attach the top piece to the support with finish nails. Set the nails and fill the holes with flush spackle. Use the miter saw to cut 45-degree angles on the decorative trim, and then attach it where the top and support pieces meet (figure B).

4. Use dowel rod to attach each knob. Try several sizes of dowels until one that fits snuggly into the hole where the stem would be placed.

5. Space the knobs six inches apart, allowing two inches on each end of the board. Drill the holes to a depth of 1/4 inch (wrap a piece of tape at the desired depth on the bit to avoid drilling too far).

6. Paint the rack as desired. The featured project has a base coat of gold. Once dry, a crackle medium was applied, and then dark brown paint was brushed on to give it an aged look.

7. Once dry, install the doorknobs by putting wood glue into the holes, and then push in the knob (figure C).

8. Mount the rack on triangular picture-hanging hooks.
