Book Frame

Materials:

book with a plain cover
straightedge
utility knife
tape
double-sided tape or mounting glue
craft paper
pencil

Steps:

  1. Center photo on book cover and use a straightedge to measure and mark a rectangle that's slightly smaller than the picture being framed so the edges are hidden (figure A).
  2. Lay some paper behind the book's cover to protect the pages inside and use a utility knife to cut out the hole marked (figure B).
  3. Tape the picture to the inside cover.
  4. Attach double-stick tape or spray mounting glue to the back of a piece of stationary paper to back the picture.

Book Lamp

Materials:

lamp parts
lamp stem
bulb
electrical cord and socket
furniture leg protectors

Steps:

  1. Decide the order the books will be stacked in.
  2. Drill a hole through each book with a wood drill bit that's slightly bigger than the lamp stem (figure C). Push down hard while drilling because the pages need to be compressed to get a clean hole.
  3. Tack four feet onto the bottom book (figure D).
  4. Anchor the lamp with a piece of hardware (another standard lighting component from a hardware store) (figure E). Push the lamp stem through the books.
  5. Thread the cord through the stem of the lamp and attach a socket.
  6. Add a shade and a light bulb.

Book Bookends

Materials:

four books
a pair of metal bookends
hammer
nails

Steps:

  1. Line up two books and slide a bookend between them on the bottom.
  2. Open the top cover and nail the pages together to sandwich the bookend (figure F).
