Figure A
We do a lot in the kitchen--from cooking and eating to entertaining and working --so more storage space is needed to stay organized. Ergonomics and an economy of space are the buzz terms in kitchen designs today--putting things where we can reach them with minimal effort.
  • Kitchen designers today seek to recapture lost storage space and create a sense of discipline in kitchen functions. They study work and function areas with logic and designate task areas.
  • For storage throughout the house, hide out-of-season or seasonal items inside a large plastic garbage can and top it with glass and a tablecloth for a beautiful side table.

Storage Rules:

1. Put unused space to work. Hang a utensil rack above a counter, install a lazy Susan in large corner cabinets and suspend pot racks from the ceiling for practical storage.

2. Use proper containers for proper storage. "Mis an place" or "everything in its place" makes kitchen activities highly efficient. Molded wood drawer inserts create an exact fit for utensils (figure A) but to get the same efficiency , dedicate drawers to specific items. One of the more resourceful examples of this is to bring the spice rack below eye level, which makes each container visible.

3. Store according to frequency of use. Keep everyday items at your fingertips and seasonal or infrequently used things up and farther away in cabinets.
