Artist Priscilla Hauser converts a plain wedding invitation into an exquisite hand-painted gift. First, she demonstrates the method for transferring the design onto the invitation, and then shows off her artistic expertise as she adds dimension with pens and paint brushes.

Materials:

wedding invitation
#2 pencil
tracing paper
white art eraser
brush basin
paper towels
Krylon 1311 matte spray
pre-cut double mat to fit invitation
ready-made frame and glass to fit mat
cardboard backing for frame
glazier points
packaged frame hanger
two-inch wide masking tape
flat blade
screwdriver
hammer
Sta-Wet palette
Grumbacher fine point artist pen
FolkArt floating medium - #868
FolkArt colors paint palette
- #461 Hauser Dark Green
- #459 Hauser Light Green
- #957 Burgundy
brushes: Loew-Cornell
- #7300 series shader brushes, sizes #2 and #4
- #7050 series script liner brush, size #2

Steps:
  1. Trace pattern onto tracing paper. Turn traced pattern over and re-trace the back side of the pattern with a #2 pencil. Don't scribble over the back of the pattern because it will make your invitation too messy.

  2. Center the traced design, right side up, on the invitation. Trace over the pattern lines again (figure A). This will transfer the pattern onto the invitation. Mist with Krylon matte spray. Let dry.

  3. Put a small amount of the floating medium and each color onto your palette.

  4. Use a #4 flat brush and apply floating medium to the first leaf (figure B ). Once again, be sure to keep the floating medium within the pattern lines.

  5. Double-load the brush with Hauser dark green and floating medium. Blend on palette to soften color. Apply color to the inner part of leaf and pull lightly to the point. While the leaf is still wet, double-load a #2 flat brush with Hauser light green and floating medium. Blend on palette to soften color. Apply color to the point of the wet leaf and pull lightly back to the center of the leaf (figure C). Let dry.

  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to complete the remaining leaves.

  7. Using a #2 liner brush and a very thin mixture of water and Hauser dark green, lightly paint the curlicues. Let dry.

  8. Using a flat brush, apply a little floating medium to the center part of the first rose. Keep inside of the pencil lines. This will help you keep the paint from "bleeding" outside the pattern lines.

  9. Double-load a flat brush with floating medium and burgundy. Blend on palette to soften color. Apply this color to the lower part of the rose center. Quickly blend the color up, allowing the color to gently fade out. Let dry. Repeat for cup of rose.

  10. Clean the brush and blot on a paper towel.

  11. Apply the floating medium to the petals around the cup of the rose. Double-load the flat brush with floating medium and burgundy. Blend on palette to soften color and apply color to the inner edge of each petal, softly blending towards the outer edge (figure D). Let dry.

  12. Repeat steps 8 through 12 to complete each of the remaining roses.

  13. Use an artist pen to ink the pattern. Follow the pattern lines to neatly outline the design. Add shading lines, where needed or desired. Let dry. Erase pencil lines.

  14. Lightly mist with the Krylon matte spray. Let dry.

  15. Attach the invitation to the mat with masking tape. Insert into frame (figure E). Be sure that the glass is clean.

  16. Place the cardboard back in the frame and insert the glazier points with a screwdriver.

  17. Attach the hanger and hang.
Tips:
  • When applying color, keep the paint thin like a wash.

  • Don't rush the drying time.

  • Don't over-blend.

  • Blot any mistakes. Don't rub. Let dry and begin again.
