Ribbon wrap gift box
Project designed by Ellie Joos.

Materials:

shoebox
assortment of 5/8-inch, 7/8-inch and 1-1/2-inch wide satin, grosgrain, and wired-edge ribbon to weave into fabric
three yards of 1/4-inch wide gold grosgrain ribbon
fabric equal to the measurement of the box bottom and sides
fusible webbing cut size of box top
spray glue
gold spray paint
iron

Steps:

Weaving the "Ribbon Fabric"

  1. Cut lengths of ribbon and fusible interfacing to match box lid dimensions, plus two inches. Place fusible interfacing, fusible side up, on a pin-able work surface. Use a purchased pinning board, an ironing board or fabric-covered cardboard (figure A).
  2. Draw the required dimensions on the interfacing. Place the first vertical length of ribbon (the warp) on the interfacing, aligning the edge of the ribbon with the line on the interfacing.
  3. Butt the edges of the remaining warp ribbons and pin at the upper ends of the ribbons. Angle pins away from the work so pins are out of the way of the iron when fusing.
  4. Weave horizontal lengths of ribbon (the weft) one ribbon at a time through the vertical warp ribbons in an over and under fashion. Alternate the over-and-under pattern with each new horizontal length of ribbon (figure B). Continue until webbing is covered with woven ribbon.
  5. Press ribbon onto fusible with an iron according to manufacturer's instructions.
Covering the Box
  1. Spray inside of box bottom and box lid with gold spray paint. Allow to dry.
  2. For box bottom, cut fabric to equal the total length of the box including sides by total width of the box including sides (figure C).
  3. Spray cut fabric with glue. Cover box with fabric turning down the selvage and gluing the fabric to the inside of the box bottom as you go (figure D). Finish the raw edge with 1/4-inch gold metallic grosgrain ribbon (figure E).
  4. Glue woven "ribbon fabric" to box top, covering the lid sides. Allow the box to dry, then trim away excess.
  5. Glue on poinsettia, holly leaves and berries to embellish the top of the box (figure F).
