Washi Paper EggsTo transform wooden and plastic eggs into delicately patterned orbs, guest Emi Fukushima cuts Japanese washi paper into a picket fence shape and wraps it around them.
Materials:
washi paper - Yuzen pattern
plastic or wooden egg
craft glue
Ceramcoat gloss varnish or decoupage medium
paintbrush
Steps:
- Size and cut washi paper to fit over the egg shape with an 1/8-inch seam around the egg. The top and bottom of the egg should have an 1/8- to 1/4-inch overlap.
- Fold paper in half lengthwise (figure A).
- Fold in half widthwise.
- Cut three-quarters of the way up towards the fold into 1/4-inch wide strips (figure B).
- Cut each strip into a "picket fence" post.
- Unfold the paper. These are the upper and lower fences.
- Use a paintbrush to apply glue to the center of the paper and the egg, and wrap the paper around, leaving a 1/8-inch seam.
- Apply glue to each "fence post," and paste them, one by one, onto the egg, overlapping each flap (figure C). Use the back of the paintbrush or chopstick to smooth the paper onto the egg. Remove the excess glue with a wet paper towel.
- Roll the egg onto a hard, smooth surface to remove any air bubbles and wrinkles.
- Glaze the egg with varnish or decoupage medium for a high-gloss sheen.
Japanese Washi Napkin RingsMaterials
two sheets of 6" x 6" washi paper*
four wood napkin rings
craft glue
Ceramcoat gloss varnish or decoupage medium
paint brush
embellishments: coins, cording, etc.
*While washi is ideal, any thin paper may be used for this project.
Steps
- Measure the paper by wrapping it around the napkin ring and overlapping 1/8 inch. Cut excess. The width of paper will be approximately two inches (figure D).
- Fold the paper in half lengthwise, then cut 1/2-imch strips from the cut ends and toward the fold at 1/4-inch intervals.
- Unfold the paper, apply glue to its center, and wrap it around the napkin ring (figure E). Roll the napkin ring on a hard surface to remove any air pockets and wrinkles.
- Apply glue on each 1/2-inch strip individually, and place each strip inside of the ring until all strips are inside. Smooth out bubbles and wrinkles with the handle of the brush. Repeat on the other side.
- Cut paper approximately 1" x 4" to fit inside of napkin ring. Apply glue, line inside of ring, and smooth out with your thumb.
- When dry, apply varnish.
- Embellish rings with coins, cording, etc.
Resources Ceramcoat Exterior Varnish
Ceramcoat Exterior Varnishes are available in Gloss or Satin finishes and give a protective finish on projects that will be exposed to the weather. The polyurethane varnishes are ultraviolet-resistant and form a tough, flexible film that resists water and sun. It dries quickly and may be recoated when it feels dry to the touch (about 30 minutes). When dry, varnish can be wet or dry sanded. Apply thin coats, allowing each to dry before your next application.
