Foam Tombstones

sketch book
2" foam insulation
serrated knife
gray spray primer
acrylic craft paint
artist's brushes
stencils or stamps (optional)
3/8" dowels
drill with 3/8" spade bit
utility knife
hammer

Steps:

1. Get inspiration by sketching tombstones with interesting shapes at a local cemetery. Trace the desired shape(s) onto the foam and use a serrated knife to cut out the design. This leaves slightly jagged edges, perfect for creating the look that some of the stone is starting to crumble.
2. To get an eerie basecoat, spray the foam with gray primer (don't worry about full coverage as it will add to the effect). Let dry.
3. Use acrylic paints and artist's brushes for the lettering or any additional designs (write/draw them in pencil first). If you feel uncomfortable using hand lettering, try stencils or stamps. Let dry.
