Create the look of an eerie cemetery in your front yard using foam, paint and inspiration from the real thing!
Materials:

sketch book
2" foam insulation
serrated knife
gray spray primer
acrylic craft paint
artist's brushes
stencils or stamps (optional)
3/8" dowels
drill with 3/8" spade bit
utility knife
hammer

Steps:

1. Get inspiration by sketching tombstones with interesting shapes at a local cemetery. Trace the desired shape(s) onto the foam and use a serrated knife to cut out the design. This leaves slightly jagged edges, perfect for creating the look that some of the stone is starting to crumble.
2. To get an eerie basecoat, spray the foam with gray primer (don't worry about full coverage as it will add to the effect). Let dry.
3. Use acrylic paints and artist's brushes for the lettering or any additional designs (write/draw them in pencil first). If you feel uncomfortable using hand lettering, try stencils or stamps. Let dry.

4. Drip watered-down paints from the top of the tombstone or the bottom edge of the lettering to soften everything plus add texture and depth (figure A). Let dry.
5. Cut two 20-inch dowels for each tombstone and sharpen both ends into a point using a utility knife to hold the tombstones in the ground. Use a 3/8-inch spade bit to make two slots in the bottom of the tombstone for them to be inserted. Be careful to keep them centered in the foam so the dowels don't poke through the front or back.
6. Use a hammer to drive the dowels into the ground and shove the tombstones over them. All the better if a few tombstones lean a bit to the right or left.
