Get all the news on ghost beads when The Carol Duvall Show camera crew travels to Arizona to visit Navaho jeweler Tonia Yazzie. Yazzie explains the history of ghost beads, harvested from cedar trees in the Canyon de Chelly. Squirrels living in the canyon pierce juniper berries and harvest the nut inside, leaving the hull behind. In a process used by more than nine generations, Yazzie harvests the hulls then cleans, pierces and strings them to create native American bead jewelry. According to legend, the dried juniper berry beads lend protection against bad spirits, bad thoughts and bad dreams.
