The black sticks that hold these jack-o'-lanterns practically disappear into the night, making the pumpkin appear to be floating in the darkness.
Materials:

papier-mache jack-o'-lanterns (available at craft stores)
paint (orange, green and black)
paintbrushes
black marker
utility knife
battery-operated white lights (short strands)
wooden plate (available at craft stores)
1/2" wooden dowel
screws
drill
hot glue gun
polyurethane

Steps:

1. Paint the pumpkins and let dry.
2. Draw the jack-o'-lantern face with a marker, and then cut it out using a utility knife. Cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin large enough for the battery pack of the lights to fit through. Insert the lights.

3. To make each post, drill a pilot hole through the center of a wooden plate and one in the end of the dowel. Attach the two by driving a screw through the plate into the dowel (figure A).
4. Paint the post and plate black and let dry. Secure the base of the jack-o'-lantern to the plate using hot glue. Apply a couple coats of polyurethane to the entire project for protection.
