Steps:

1. Paint the egg with two or more coats of licorice-colored paint (figure A ). Let dry.

2. Dip a small piece of ocean sponge into water. Squeeze out the excess moisture. Dab the sponge into Heartland blue-colored paint and blot it onto a rag. Dab the blue paint onto the egg as desired (figure B).

3. Carefully tape off a 1-1/2-inch border around the top and bottom of the egg. Paint the bands with two coats of licorice-colored paint. Remove the tape before the paint dries (figure C).

5. Fill a large dauber (figure D) with yellow paint. Blot the dauber on a rag. Apply a large circle and then a medium-sized circle to form the body of the chick (figure E).

6. Fill a small dauber with yellow paint. Blot on a rag. Paint the chick's head (figure F).

7. Double load the dauber by picking up a little raw sienna on one side. Blot on a rag. Dab on the chick to shade (figures G and H). Let dry.

8. Wipe the dauber off and pick up warm white-colored paint on one edge. Blot on a rag and apply highlights to the chick. Let dry.

9. Using a liner brush, paint the beak, leg, tail and wings of the chick with yellow paint.

10. Shade the wings with an outline of burnt umber-colored paint.

11. Highlight the chick's beak and legs with pure orange-colored paint.

12. Paint a fine line of burnt umber-colored paint on the beak and legs of the chick to create a shadow.

13. Paint each eye with a dot of licorice-colored paint (figure I) and highlight with a dot of warm white-colored paint.

14. Paint a shadow under the chick's feet with a light wash of licorice.

15. Paint lettering on the bands using a liner brush and two coats of thinned yellow paint. Paint over the brush strokes with a round watercolor brush and licorice- colored paint. Let dry.

16. Varnish the egg with two or three coats of FolkArt satin varnish. Let dry.
