Tips 10 and 9: The Front of the House/Outdoor Lighting

Materials:

one roll of 10"-wide roof tin flashing (comes in 25' lengths)
tin snips
hammer
carpenter punch
chisel
marker
brown craft paper
scrapbook grommets
grommet setter
scrap piece of lumber
work gloves
clamp
monofilament

Steps:

1. Draw a pattern onto craft paper in the shape of a bird and a wing.
2. Open the roll of flashing carefully and cut a length to the sizes needed. Trace around the templates with a marker. Cut out the shapes with tin snips while wearing gloves as the tin can be sharp.
3. Clamp one of the tin shapes to the scrap lumber. Punch a design with the punch (to make holes) or the chisel (to make lines). Flip the shape over at various times—more texture will develop and the tin will remain flat.
4. Attach the wing to the body with one or two grommets. Punch a hole at the top of the bird and use monofilament to hang the ornament to a tree.
