Guest Trina Lucas shows how to make plaster of Paris hearts that can be given as gifts on Valentine's Day, hung as ornaments on the Christmas tree, or displayed purely for a romantic effect.
Materials:
plaster of Paris
heart-shaped mold, size as desired *
Testors Paint
narrow paint brush
wide paint brush
acrylic paints
glaze
bamboo skewer or toothpick
* Candy molds may be used if small hearts are preferred.
Steps:
- Mix the plaster of Paris as directed, pour it into the mold and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Take hardened plaster out of the mold and let it cool.
- Use a pencil to sketch your intended design on the heart. Using the bamboo skewer, toothpick, or other slightly sharp object, score the mold along your penciled design (figure A). Brush the dust away.
- Glaze the mold.
- Using a thin brush, paint the fine lines of the outline. Paint the filler colors with the wider brush (figure B).
- Re-glaze.
