A wall-mounted face plate hides the wires and a center electrical box, allowing two fixtures to be hung to each side in place of an old one.
Materials:

1x8 pine lumber
miter saw
router
awl
drill
drywall screws
extension wires and nuts
light fixtures

Steps:

1. Cut the face plate to length using a miter saw, and then add a decorative edge using a router with an ogee bit. Drill a pilot hole for each fixture using a keyhole saw bit.
2. Flip the board over to rout a groove from one pilot hole to the other using a 3/4-inch straight bit and a router guide. This groove holds the wires so the board will rest flat against the wall.
3. Attach the mounting plates for the light fixtures to the front of the board.
4. Add extension wires to the existing wires and push the wire nuts back into the wall hole.
5. Attach the face plate to the wall with screws, which should be close to the mounting plates so they're hidden by the fixture once it's installed. Install the fixture as directed.
