Many decoupage kits contain glue, brushes, varnish and scissors. Also, although almost any type of paper will suffice for decoupage, some crafters prefer to use special papers that have no creases and that work well with glue. For this project, the base of the lamp is a blown-glass chimney available in lamp and lighting stores or from retailers of craft and decorating supplies.
Materials:
scissors
papers with decorative designs or pictures printed on them
blown-glass chimney
base and a cap to fit the chimney
glass cleaner
paper towels
decoupage glue
lamp kit such as Design-A-Shade, Dec-A-Lamp, or Hollywood Lights
Steps:
- Cut out all the pictures to be used in the lamp. The easiest way to cut is to hold the scissors steady and move the picture. If the picture has an intricate design, use a small craft knife and a self-healing board to cut out the smaller areas.
- Clean the inside of the glass with glass cleaner and a paper towel.
- Spread decoupage glue in the glass with your fingers. It will go on milky but should dry clear.
- If necessary, make small pressure cuts on the paper to help it adhere smoothly to the curved surface of the glass. Dip a picture in water, and press it inside the glass onto the glue. Press out any bubbles and wrinkles with your fingertips. Repeat the process with the other pictures, and let dry for two to three hours or overnight.
- After the pictures dry, clean the inside of the chimney with glass cleaner and a paper towel to remove any haze from the glue.
- Paint the background with acrylic paint and a sponge. (A sponge is easier to use in the chimney than a brush.) Apply one or two coats, and allow 10 minutes to dry between coats. If using two colors, apply the lighter color first, or apply gold foil as the first coat, and fill in any cracks in the foil with gold acrylic paint. Let the paint dry for 30 minutes.
- Fit the chimney with the base and the cap.
- Following the manufacturer's instructions, wire the chimney with a lamp kit and a rod.
