  • Cut shapes out of a lampshade with either a craft knife, or use a decorative hole punch (figure A).

  • Decorate the edges of a lampshade with decorative butterflies or other accessories (figure B). Use tacky or fabric glue to attach them. Small, lightweight seashells also work well for decorating lampshades.

  • Dress up old or simple lampshades by adding beaded fridge around the bottom edge.

  • Rip up old sheet music into various sizes. Spray adhesive to the back of each piece of sheet music and adhere it to a lampshade. Overlap the pieces slightly. Let dry. Apply two coats of decoupage and let dry overnight (figure C) . This can also be done with photos that you've torn or cut out of magazines. You could also use pieces of wallpaper.

  • Glue various squares of fabric onto a lampshade with fabric glue to create a unique quilted look (figure D).

  • Working from the bottom upward, use hot glue or tacky glue to adhere feathers to a lampshade (figure E).
