Ribbon Lamp

Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-136 -- More Projects »
Ellie Schneider from Offray Ribbon Company demonstrates two ways to use decorative ribbons to create custom lampshades.
  • To make a lampshade using woven, wire-edged ribbon, begin with a wire lampshade frame. Pin one end of the ribbon at the top of the frame to secure it, and begin wrapping the ribbon vertically around the frame. When the ribbon is at the bottom of the frame, add a drop of hot glue to keep it in place.
  • When using shaded ribbon twist the ribbon once each time you wrap it to the back of the frame. The twist will bring the opposite edge of the ribbon around so it will show as it is being wrapped. This will give a pretty striped effect. When the frame is completely wrapped, glue or stitch the end of the ribbon on the inside of the frame.

To decorate a lampshade with craft or floral ribbon, again use a wire frame (this method can also be used to cover a paper shade). Cut strips of ribbon to fit the shade, adding a half inch at top and bottom for finished edges. The ribbon will cover the spines on the shade, so make tiny slits in each piece where it meets a spine. Position a piece of ribbon on the shade with the slit at the spine. Fold the top edge over and hot-glue, holding it with a clothespin until dry; repeat at bottom edge. Continue around the shade until it is completely covered.
