Art portrait lights like the one above are one type of artificial light used in the home.
Registered interior designer Deborah Burnett explains how to enlighten our homes and lifestyles by using lights to achieve that extra-dimensional decorative effect, including tricks on using uplights and picture lights.

Kinetic light: Any source that gives off both heat and light such as the flames from a candle or an open fire.

Natural light: Any source of light from the heavens such as the sun, moon, stars and other natural occurrences.

Artificial light: There are two types:

  1. Decorative lamps and fixtures that can be moved from one space to another. In addition to table lamps, plant up-lights and art portrait lights are included in this group.
  2. Architectural lighting included all light sources that are a physical aspect of the building or mounted directly into the ceiling. Recessed light fixtures and custom-built fluorescent light boxes are a good example of this type.
